Margarete passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning, July 6. She was born in Ellenberg, Germany, on May 21, 1941.

With her Dad off to war and her Mom a working nurse, she was raised by her grandparents. As a young woman in East Germany, Margarete learned lithography. At about 18 years of age, she was marked for leadership in the communist youth. Her Mother was against this, and Margarete fled to Berlin. With one suitcase and not knowing where she was going, the experience was terrifying! From West Germany, she fled to Switzerland, where she worked as a lithographer. Margarete’s mother was able to visit on one occasion, and this was the last time she saw her.

From Switzerland, Margarete immigrated to Canada. First to Toronto, then Winnipeg. Work brought her to Vancouver for a short period of time and then back to Winnipeg. Through the German Club and Calvary Temple singles group, Margarete met her lifelong friends.

Margarete’s faith in God was the cornerstone of her life. She was baptized at Calvary Temple on May 29, 1977.

Margarete enjoyed painting in watercolours, sewing and in particular, she had a flair for decorating. She was an excellent thrifter, and the home she shared with Vicky was evidence of it.

After her career in lithography, Margarete worked at the German embassy in Winnipeg for 20 years before retiring.

Her progressively failing memory made life very difficult for Margarete. We are thankful to Bergen Gardens and Maple Crest Cottage for the care they provided during her last months.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Seasons Funeral Service, 576 Balsam Crescent. Oakbank, MB. Interment will be at Sunnyside Cemetery.

Deuteronomy 31:8  The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
